Cathedral City approves ban on branding

The Cathedral City's council approved an ordinance Wednesday banning body branding and scarification in the city, joining a growing cadre of officials who say they are concerned about the safety of body art procedures statewide.

The City Council voted 4-0 to prohibit tattoo parlors and other businesses from administering what's commonly called “extreme body modification.”

Councilman Paul Marchand abstained from voting.

The ordinance was spearheaded by Cathedral City Councilman Greg Pettis. He said he's been aware of the practice for more than a decade, but the safety issues were recently brought to light.
